What is the Wine Scholar Guild?

The Guild provides study & certification programs on the wines and wine regions of France, Italy and Spain.

Originally created as the French Wine Society, the organization quickly became the leading provider of French wine study and certification programs internationally.

In order to accommodate wine industry requests for equally detailed study programs on Italy and Spain, the French Wine Society reorganized as the Wine Scholar Guild.

Wine & Spirit IQ is proud to bring the following programs to Thailand.

Become an Italian Wine Scholar!

The Italian Wine Scholar™ curriculum is an Italian wine education program designed to provide committed students of wine with the most advanced and comprehensive specialization program on Italy bar none! It was created by native Italian, Maurizio Broggi, DWS, FWS with the support of the Italian wine DOC/G consortia.

The Italian Wine Scholar™ program mirrors the unparalleled level of depth, accuracy, detail and academic rigor offered by the acclaimed French Wine Scholar™ program.

Like the French Wine Scholar program, the Italian Wine Scholar program also confers a post-nominal to wine professionals and enthusiasts who successfully pass the certification exams  (Ex: John Smith, IWS)

The Italian Wine Scholar program is composed of two separate units:

  • Unit 1: Northern Italy

  • Unit 2: Central & Southern Italy

Candidates need a composite score of 75% to receive the IWS credential, i.e. the scores from both exams are added together and averaged for final assessment.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

The Italian Wine Scholar™ program is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts.  It is a great resource and supplement for learners of wine moving toward the advanced wine programs from the CMS, CWE, WSET or MW. While not a pre-requisite, we recommend that candidates successfully complete at least the first level of one of these programs before enrolling the IWS program.

All learners of wine eventually discover Italy. Some use it as the starting point to begin their wine journey while others arrive in Italy after having sampled the wines of other countries.  Italy's ancient people - Etruscans and Romans  - played a major role in spreading viticulture and winemaking throughout Europe.   Besides, Italy is the botanic birth place of thousands of grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese, Aglianico, Negroamaro to name a few.  Therefore, by studying Italian wine, learners dig deep to the roots of the wine culture, which is key to understand its present state and future development.
