Service Description

OVERVIEW The Italian Wine Scholar™ curriculum is an Italian wine education program designed to provide committed students of wine with the most advanced and comprehensive specialization program on Italy bar none! It was created by native Italian, Maurizio Broggi, DWS, FWS with the support of the Italian wine DOC/G consortia. The Italian Wine Scholar program also confers a post-nominal to wine professionals and enthusiasts who successfully pass the certification exams (Ex: John Smith, IWS) The Italian Wine Scholar program is composed of two separate units: Unit 1: Northern Italy 10 class meetings of 3 hours of lecture & tutored tastings hosted by an approved instructor. 60 in-class wines tasting samples The 260-page full-color Italian Wine Scholar Unit 1 study manual Unit 2: Central & Southern Italy 10 class meetings of 3 hours of lecture & tutored tastings hosted by an approved instructor. 60 in-class wines tasting samples The 218-page full-color Italian Wine Scholar Unit 2 study manual Registration for the Italian Wine Scholar Unit 1 & 2 Exam 1-year access to the Italian Wine Scholar Unit 1 & 2 online study program for class preparation and review Candidates need a composite score of 75% to receive the IWS credential, i.e. the scores from both exams are added together and averaged for final assessment. WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR? The Italian Wine Scholar™ program is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts. It is a great resource and supplement for learners of wine moving toward the advanced wine programs from the CMS, CWE, WSET or MW. While not a pre-requisite, we recommend that candidates successfully complete at least the first level of one of these programs before enrolling the IWS program. WHY STUDY ITALIAN WINES? All learners of wine eventually discover Italy. Some use it as the starting point to begin their wine journey while others arrive in Italy after having sampled the wines of other countries. Italy's ancient people - Etruscans and Romans - played a major role in spreading viticulture and winemaking throughout Europe. Besides, Italy is the botanic birth place of thousands of grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese, Aglianico, Negroamaro to name a few. Therefore, by studying Italian wine, learners dig deep to the roots of the wine culture, which is key to understand its present state and future development.
