OVERVIEW The Italian Wine Scholar® program sets the industry standard as the most detailed and comprehensive certification program devoted entirely to the wines of Italy. It is composed of two separate units, that can be studied in any order: The Wines of Northern Italy (Unit 1) The Wines of Central & Southern Italy (Unit 2) WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR? The Italian Wine Scholar™ program is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts. It is a great resource and supplement for learners of wine moving toward the advanced wine programs from the CMS, CWE, WSET or MW. While not a pre-requisite, we recommend that candidates successfully complete at least the first level of one of these programs before enrolling the IWS program. WHY STUDY ITALIAN WINES? Studying the wines of Italy is like studying the wines of 20 different countries— each with their own identity. The combination of unique, indigenous grape varieties, wine making traditions and a focus on quality sets the stage for wines of distinction that cannot be duplicated elsewhere. The wines possess a sense of place and reflect the spirit of the people who have been making them for centuries. By exploring Italian wine, students gain a deeper appreciation for wine in general. UNIT 1 INCLUDES: 24 hours of in-class study 50+ wine tasting samples covering the regions of VALLE D’AOSTA, PIEMONTE, LIGURIA,, LOMBARDIA, EMILIA-ROMAGNA, TRENTINO, ALTO ADIGE, VENETO, FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA 1 Course book for Unit 1 Access online e-learning activities Examination for Unit 1 EXAMINATION Both Unit 1 and Unit 2 include a 100-point multiple choice exam. Students have one hour to complete each exam separately. The scores from both exams are added together and averaged for final assessment. Passing score is 75. Candidates scoring 85-90 pass with “Honors”. Candidates scoring 91-100 pass with “Highest Honors”. There is no wine tasting component to the exam. To attend any course, you must be over 20 years old. Only a completed booking form with student declaration will be accepted. Bookings are not secured until payment is received. All courses must be paid for in advance. Courses are subject to a minimum of 10 candidates. If, on reaching the booking deadline, there is an insufficient number of candidates, the course will be cancelled, and full refund will be arranged for candidates who have already paid minus the costs of materials already supplied. CANCELLATION & REFUNDS By Wine & Spirit IQ: In the rare case of unavoidable reason a host-educator is unable to teach, and a replacement cannot be made, a session may be cancelled and rescheduled. Wine and Spirit IQ will make every effort to reschedule the session to a date that is most suitable for most candidates. No refund, however, will be made to any candidate who is unable to attend the rescheduled session for whatever reason. By Candidate: Bookings are refundable up to 21 working days prior to the course starting date. All refund requests must be made by email. A fee of 1,500 THB plus the full cost of Study material supplied will be deducted and the remainder of the course fee refunded. No refunds are available for cancellations received within 20 working days prior to the first day of class. TRANSFERS/DEFERRALS Transfer of a booking to an alternative course date is permissible up to 21 working days prior to the starting date – subject to availability. Requests must be received by email. Transfer will incur a fee of 1,500 THB. Transferred bookings are not eligible for refunds. EXAMINATION Exam dates are fixed to the course onto which you have booked. Any transfer to an alternative exam date will incur a fee of 1,500 THB. Exam transfer requests must be made by email only to exams@wineandspiritiq.com and are subject to availability. Exam transfer requests made within 21 or less working days of the exam date will incur a fee of 1,500 THB plus the cost of unused exam paper: 4,500 THB. COURSE MATERIALS Except for the courses for which course materials are handed in on the first day of class, course materials might be picked up before classes start at Wine & Spirit IQ’s location (Room 902, floor 9, i-Yara building, 2/22 Chan Rd, Thung Wat Don, Sathon, Bangkok 10120) upon appointment only.
