Service Description

OVERVIEW The Spanish Wine Scholar™ education program is the most advanced and comprehensive certification course on the wines of Spain. The syllabus takes a regional approach and discusses all Spanish wine appellations and the factors that shape their identities. It provides committed students of wine with an unparalleled set of study tools that are designed to maximize learning and boost knowledge retention. The program was created by Spanish wine specialist Rick Fisher, Spanish Wine Scholar™ Education Director. Wines from Spain (ICEX - Spain's Trade & Investment Government Agency) has endorsed the program in recognition of its exceptional level of depth, accuracy, detail, and academic rigor. Students who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam will earn the Spanish Wine Scholar™ (SWS) post-nominal (e.g. John Smith, SWS). WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR? The Spanish Wine Scholar™ program is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts. It is a great resource and supplement for learners of wine moving toward the advanced wine programs from the CMS, CWE, WSET or MW. While not a pre-requisite, we recommend that candidates successfully complete at least the first level of one of these programs before enrolling the SWS program. WHY STUDY SPANISH WINES? Despite its long history of grape growing and wine production, Spain is still relatively unfamiliar to most students of wine. While most of Europe was healing after WWII, mending bridges and rebuilding, Spain was experiencing decades of isolation under the regime of General Francisco Franco. Today, Spain is an exciting and dynamic wine producing country. Many of the world’s finest red grapes are indigenous to Spain, including Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), and Monastrell (Mourvèdre). Additionally, Spain is home to one of the oldest wine styles in the world: Sherry. By studying Spanish wine, the student gains a deeper appreciation for how tradition and modernity perfectly coexist and why Spain is one of the most exciting and enviable countries on the world wine stage. EXAMINATION The final examination consists of a 100 MCQ. Candidates who achieve a 75% pass will be awarded a the FWS post-nominal, a pin and certificate. Candidates who achieve a score of 85-90% will graduate with Honors Candidates who achieve a score of 91% or above will graduate with Highest Honors.
