How does the online program work?

Online study offers students the flexibility to complete their study at a time and place that suits them.

Pre-considerations

While WSET online courses are a great option for many, it is important to be aware of the following requirements:

  • WSET examinations are not online, students will be required to attend the examination in person. 

  • For qualifications at level 2 Wine & Spirit IQ will run a tasting technique workshop to support their online learning.

  • Suggested wine samples are not  included in the cost of an online course.

Looking behind the label

A beginner- to intermediate-level qualification exploring wines, suitable for industry professionals and wine enthusiasts.

This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.  Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
 

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT)

  • How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:

    • Chardonnay

    • Pinot Grigio/Gris

    • Sauvignon Blanc

    • Riesling

    • Cabernet Sauvignon

    • Merlot

    • Pinot Noir

    • Syrah/Shiraz

  • The style and quality of wines:

    • made from 22 regionally important grape varieties

    • produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world

  • How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence key styles of:

    • Sparkling wines

    • Fortified wines

  • Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality

  • Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine

  • Principles of food and wine pairing

ASSESSMENT
 

A one-hour closed-book examination comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions.

​

LEARNING ONLINE

​

The 30-hour online course has been expertly designed by WSET to meet the same learning outcomes as provided in the classroom.  The course has starting and finishing dates along with guidelines on progressions; however, students are free to log-in and complete their learning hours at times that suit them.  Throughout the course, students have access to a subject-specialist educator who provides feedback on assigned exercises and responds to students' course related queries.  Students will learn through a range of independent and/or group activities supported by videos and quizzes, designed to achieve the required learning outcomes to prepare for the examination.

 

Forums allow for students to interact with others on the same course.  At the completion of the course, Wine & Spirit IQ will arrange examinations in the same conditions as classroom courses.
